Butch Willis & the Rocks

Forthcomings Archival Restoration & Preservation

On December 22, 2013, the original master tape from Butch Willis & the Rocks' second album, "Forthcomings," was carefully (and temporarily) restored it to it's original high fidelity condition at Inner Ear studios by Don Zientara. The tape was then transferred from reel-to-reel tape machine into the digital zeros and ones as to be more portable and pliable. In 1985, Don recorded the album at his first studio location in the basement of his house in Arlington, Virginia.

Mark Robinson had met Butch Willis at his home in Maryland earlier that morning and the two had driven to Arlington with the tape. Butch suggested they visit a McDonald's restaurant. They dined. Butch then smoked a thin Phillies small cigar.

Two minutes after noon, the two arrived at Inner Ear and were greeted by Don. It was decided at about 12:20 that the tape was flaking to much and was playing slowly and would need to be delicately baked. Mark drove Butch home and went back to Inner Ear at 8:00 P.M. At that time, the tape sounded perfect, and the tape was transferred in real time with tapping toes. The session finished around 9:00 P.M.

Four days later, on Boxing Day, 2013, Mark returned to Butch's townhouse home with Teen-Beat's very own Evelyn Hurley and two children. They met with Butch, reminisced, and handed the tape back to him for safe keeping.

While Don and Mark were transferring the tape, Mark asked Don what the "Forthcomings" sessions were like. Don said "it was kind of a party."

After Teen-Beat 514 was completed, the digital transfer was handed off to Trevor Kampmann for re-mastering for it's resurrection on a re-issue phonograph record.
